Brushing Scam
Brushing Scam
Have you ever received a package you didn’t order? While it might seem like a harmless mistake, it could be a Brushing Scam. A Brushing Scam is where third-party sellers on websites such as Amazon or eBay, place fake orders using stolen personal information to ship low-cost items to unsuspecting recipients. The goal is to create verified purchases, allowing the seller to post fake positive reviews under the recipient’s name. These fraudulent reviews help the sellers improve their visibility, boost their credibility, and mislead real customers.
If you receive an unexpected package, it doesn’t necessarily mean your account details were compromised. However, it does indicate that your name and address are in a scammer’s database. Scammers often obtain this information through data breaches.
What to do if you receive an unexpected package:
- Do not scan any QR codes on the package
- Do not pay for the merchandise you have received
- Update your compromised passwords and enable MFA if available
- Monitor your accounts for any signs of fraud
- File a fraud report with the retailer who sent the package
- If the package has a return address and is unopened, you may return it to the sender
