2026 Alexander Ferguson Outstanding Volunteer Award
At the League’s Annual Awards Ceremony on June 11, the importance of volunteer leadership was front and center. Credit union volunteers play a vital role in guiding their institutions, championing members’ interests, and ensuring the cooperative spirit remains strong. In recognition of her exceptional service and leadership, Patty Suga, Board Chair of Connected CU, was honored with the 2026 Alexander Ferguson Outstanding Volunteer Award.
Named in honor of one of Maine’s credit union pioneers, the Alexander Ferguson Outstanding Volunteer Award recognizes individuals who have demonstrated exceptional volunteer leadership, dedication, and commitment to advancing the credit union movement. Throughout her years of service, Suga has exemplified these qualities through her thoughtful leadership, unwavering commitment, and passion for serving both her credit union and her community.
As Board Chair of Connected CU, she has played a pivotal role during one of the organization’s most significant periods of transition. Most notably, she led the Board through the search, interview, and selection process for a new President & CEO. The effort required extensive time, careful evaluation, and the ability to balance diverse perspectives while remaining focused on the long-term success of the credit union.
When Suga first stepped into the role of Board Chair, she did so with humility and a strong sense of responsibility. While initially hesitant to take on such a significant leadership position, she recognized the importance of serving the organization when it was needed most. Over time, she has grown into a confident and respected leader, guiding discussions with purpose, fostering collaboration, and helping the Board navigate complex decisions with clarity and professionalism.
Her leadership style is grounded in trust, thoughtful consideration, and a deep commitment to members. She serves as a steady voice during important discussions, encouraging collaboration while ensuring decisions are made thoughtfully and with the credit union’s mission at the forefront. Whether discussing strategic initiatives or organizational change, Suga continually asks an important question: how will this impact and benefit our members?
That member-focused perspective has helped Connected CU maintain strong governance, strengthen collaboration between the Board and management team, and successfully navigate leadership transitions. Her role in the selection of the credit union’s current President & CEO will have a lasting impact on the organization and its future success.
Beyond her leadership responsibilities, Suga’s commitment extends far beyond the expectations of a volunteer board member. She dedicates significant time preparing for meetings, reviewing materials, and staying informed on issues affecting the credit union industry. A strong advocate for continuing education, she regularly participates in conferences and professional development opportunities to better serve the credit union, its members, and the community.
Additionally, her dedication to service extends beyond the boardroom. Deeply connected to her community, she brings the same spirit of service to her professional work, her farm, and her volunteer efforts. That community-minded perspective helps ensure the credit union remains grounded in its mission and connected to the people it serves. Combined with her willingness to embrace challenges, it is one of the qualities that has made her such an effective and respected leader.
Those who work alongside Suga describe her as thoughtful, grounded, supportive, and approachable. She has a unique ability to bring people together, encourage meaningful dialogue, and create an environment where all voices are heard. Respected for her character, she leads with compassion and a sense of humor that makes others feel valued and welcomed.
Through her kindness, wisdom, and commitment to serving others, she has earned the respect and admiration of colleagues, staff, and fellow volunteers alike. That is why she is deeply deserving of this year’s Alexander Ferguson Award.
Congratulations again, Patty, and thank you for all you do to make Maine’s credit union movement stronger!
